Chemical spill from 1970 train crash may be cause of high school Tourette’s-like outbreak
Mail Online
As the Tourette's-like illness continues to plague Le Roy school and baffle health experts, questions are now arising around the cleanup of a 40-year-old chemical spill that contaminated some of the local water supply.
Around 30,000 gallons of trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent that's hazardous in high doses and can affect the nervous system, were dumped into the ground during a train crash in 1970 on the outskirts of Le Roy.
The EPA declared the area a Superfund site in 1999 after the TCE soaked into the ground and spread into a plume under part of Le Roy.
The site is now in a state of disrepair and neglect, according to PIX 11 News, with more than 200 drums of hazardous waste rusting outdoors, some of which had holes in them allowing the contents to leak out.
The EPA admitted to the station they didn't know what was in all of the barrels and said about one hundred of them have been there since the 1990s.
A spokesman said: 'The barrels contain dirt and rock from when wells were dug to monitor ground water at the site. Most of these drums have been tested and contain material that is not considered hazardous and we are gathering more information about the balance.
'EPA is taking steps to get these drums removed from the site as soon as possible.'
A contractor confirmed to the station that the rock and dirt in the drums did contain TCE.
'To be safe, it's put in drums and carted away and there's a plant that burns it,' he said. 'But it's like everything else. They forget about it until the cameras show up and it's like, "Oh, we better get rid of the damn things".'
Doctors and teachers at the school deny that the disorder affecting 19 girls and one adult have anything to do with the spill.
Le Roy historian Irene Walters said she remembers the spill and said the chemicals contaminated all the wells in the area and several of her friends died from cancer.

California: 12-Year-Olds to Get
HPV Vaccine Without Parental Consent
California girls as young as 12 can soon receive the human papillomavirus , or HPV, vaccine without the consent of their parents. Last Sunday Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill into law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2012.
“It’s always a close question as to what we might allow,” ABC News’ affiliate KABC-TV reported Brown as saying. “But we do that with other reproductive kinds of issues, and I felt this one was similar to what we’ve done before.”
The HPV vaccine, which includea the brands Gardasil and Ceravix, can be administered to girls as young as 9, and as old as 26. Each year, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer in the U.S., and almost all of these cancers are HPV-related, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The HPV vaccine can prevent several strains of the cancer.
The new law, sponsored by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and several other state health agencies, set off a flurry of protest from several conservative groups.
“Jerry Brown is deceptively telling preteen girls it will protect them from HPV, giving them a false sense of security that they can have the sexual activity they want without risking developing cervical cancer or a raft of other negative consequences,” Randy Thomasson, a spokesperson for SaveCalifornia.org, said in a statement.
Karen England of Capitol Resources Institute criticized the law because of what it might mean in taxpayer dollars.
“If her parents aren’t aware of it, she will be emancipated, and the state will be paying for every single minor that’s encouraged to go into a clinic and get these different boosters,” England told KABC-TV.
About 30 other states have enacted similar laws to California’s.
Dr. Mark Einstein, director of the departments of gynecologic oncology and obstetrics at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, said that the HPV vaccine is recommended by all scientific stake-holding organizations as routine for all 11- and 12-year-olds in the U.S., but that less than half of vaccine-eligible girls are getting the vaccine. Far fewer get all three doses.
“One of these challenges is the need for parental consent,” said Einstein. “In the U.K., Australia and other countries, such a need for parental consent does not exist, and their vaccine rates exceed 80 percent of vaccine-eligible girls.”

The police has been accused of shocking brutality after videos emerged showing officers in New York punching Occupy Wall Street protesters and mowing them down on motorbikes.
As demonstrations turned bitterly violent, hundreds of protesters clashed with police as they marched in Manhattan - jumping over barriers, pushing over police scooters and blocking traffic.
Officers in turn seem to have responded in the most draconian manner. In one clip a policeman appears intentionally to run over a protester, trapping his leg under his motorbike's back wheel.
What to expect if you don’t kiss the asses of the bullies & morons at the US border
"We don't need any grounds. We're the United States."
Listen to a leaked secret recording from a person and his family detained at the Canada/US boarder.
Seems the US is getting at least 3 Terrorists crossing this boarder every day, sounds like they are doing a grand job, or are they? Just listen to the attitude and the crap these boarder guards give out. This is how you can expect to be greeted, with the same, when you decide to go visit the US for no other reason then to be a tourist.
Another Coronal Hole Spewing Solar Wind Our Way – Due July 19th
Space Weather

A dark gap in the sun's atmosphere--a "coronal hole"--is spewing solar wind toward Earth. Estimated time of arrival: July 19th. This morning, UV-filtered telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Obervatory photographed the opening:
Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows hot gas to escape. A million mile-per-hour stream of solar wind flowing from this hole could spark polar geomagnetic storms when it arrives early next week. High-latitude sky watchers should be prepared for auroras.

Sergeant who left police dogs to die in hot car slashes wrists in ‘suicide bid’ after throwing himself from colleague’s car
Last updated at 1:27 PM on 28th June 2011
A police dog handler whose two animals died in his car on the hottest days of the year threw himself from a colleague's vehicle after the incident.
Sergeant Ian Craven, 49, flung himself from the car and later slashed his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt after learning of their deaths.
The officer, who is now being investigated, was found in Newham, east London, and was today still receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Sgt Craven, who faces prosecution for animal cruelty, left the two police dogs - a working Belgian Malinois and a German Shepherd puppy - in an unventilated car at the Metropolitan Police's dog training centre in Keston, Kent, on Sunday as temperatures soared to 29c.
It is the second time he has been responsible for the death of a dog left in a vehicle.
He was disciplined over the loss of a spaniel at the Metropolitan Police's prestigious dog training centre in July 2004 – but went on to be promoted.
In Sunday's incident the animals collapsed in the rear of his airless car as temperatures rose to 29c (84f) at the same training centre.
Staff pulled the Belgian malinois Chay and five-month-old alsatian Milly from the vehicle by smashing its closed windows.
They doused the dogs in water and raced them to an emergency vet but nothing could be done.
Kennel assistant, Tina Dale, 54, who was among those who tried to save the animals, described it as the 'worst day of my life'
She said on a social networking site: 'The suffering those dogs went through is too unbearable to think about. I'm in bits, we tried so so hard, but it was too long, the damage had been done. What a bloody awful way to die.'
Animal welfare charities called for Sergeant Craven to face the full force of the law.
Jan Creamer, head of Animal Defenders International, said: 'It is the golden rule that you never ever leave dogs in hot cars.
'While we do not doubt that this was a tragic accident, we would have thought that the Met Police dog unit should be setting an example to others.
'We would question why dogs were in the car at all as there are kennelling facilities on-site, we believe.
'Surely it should have been standard operating procedure to put the dogs in kennels on hot days.'
Chay was used by police for breeding and Milly was still being trained.
Firefighters beat back flames on nuclear lab property
By Zelie Pollon
SANTA FE, New Mexico | Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:21pm EDT
SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - A raging wildfire in Los Alamos on Monday briefly entered the property of the nation's preeminent nuclear facility, Los Alamos National Laboratory, a vast complex that houses research laboratories and a plutonium facility.
A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for the town of Los Alamos, which has a population of about 12,000.
Firefighters were able to douse the flames on the one-acre "spot fire" just inside the southwestern boundary of the lab site, about 25 miles outside Santa Fe, authorities said.
Buildings still have not been touched by flames, and authorities said there was little threat to sensitive areas of the 28,000-acre complex.
The laboratory's plutonium facility is on the northeast side of the complex, while the fire seems to be moving south and east, said another lab spokesman, Kevin Roark.
Dog shot 40 times in head, tied up and buried alive with only her face sticking out of the ground: Is this the worst case of animal cruelty you have ever seen?
Last updated at 2:19 AM on 27th May 2011
The discovery of a dog that was buried alive up to its nose after being shot in the head 40 times has led to calls for Malta to reform its animal welfare laws.
The crossbreed mongrel, which was named Star by his rescuers, was found near the city of Birzebbuga by animal welfare officers investigating an unrelated case.
After hearing whimpering coming from beneath a wooden board with a tree stump placed on top of it to weigh it down, officers were confronted with the distressing sight of a dog's face buried in the dirt.

Appalling cruelty: This is how star the crossbreed dog was discovered; buried alive, with all her legs tied together and with 40 gun pellets in her skull
But worse was to follow. When Star was dug out of the ground they discovered all four limbs had all been tied together and that she had been repeatedly shot with a pellet gun.
Miraculously, after doctors removed 40 pellets from her skull during emergency surgery at the Ta' Qali hospital, Star survived.
The case has caused outrage in Malta where, regardless of the nature of the act, the maximum sentence one can face for animal cruelty is a one-year jail sentence, or a maximum fine of 46,500 Euros.
A pending change in legislation will raise the maximum fine to 50,000 Euros but the one-year jail maximum will remain.
Animal lovers are holding a silent protest in Valetta next week to express their disgust.
With the abuser still at large, people have expressed their support with dedicated Facebook pages, the largest of which has 7,000 followers.

Shocking: The hole in which Star was buried, with the wooden board which had been placed over it it visible on the left
More than 1,000 people have also signed an online petition to help catch the perpetrator and to generate funds to meet Star's vet bills.
A local jewellers has offered a 250 Euro gift voucher as a reward to help catch the sick individual who abused Star.
But her case has touched hearts much further afield and Star has received a personalised blanket from Canada as well as letters of concern from the Amsterdam Fire Brigade.
Having gone through an appalling ordeal, Star is now spoilt for choice with 20 potential loving new owners offering to adopt her.
However, due to the level of trauma through which she has been, Star is considered too withdrawn to be re-homed at the moment.
'We have another 110 dogs that also went through bad experiences and need a home, maybe people can help them,' Malta Animal Welfare Department spokesperson Janice Chetcuti told The Times Of Malta.
